Communities of individuals\, small businesses and organizations across the country are joining together to celebrate the way that handmade objects enrich daily lives and contribute to the national aesthetic and economy. Downtown Iowa City businesses that are observing American Craft Week include Iowa Artisans Gallery & DJ Rinner Goldsmith\, the Chait Galleries\, AKAR\, Beadology\, The Senior Center’s Old Post Office Gallery\, Modela\, Home Ec Workshop\, and Glassando. Group events include a Gallery Walk\, October 14\, at 18 locations in downtown Iowa City. Individual events are included below. Iowa Artisans Gallery features American Craft artwork year round\, but kicks off American Craft Week with an exhibit entitled Jesse Ahrendsen\, new works in Glass. In addition\, the Gallery will highlight daily featured artists from a selected group of its contemporary craft artists. These artists include ceramists Royce Yoder and Amanda Barr\, woodworkers Thom Hall and Pete Pestalozzi\, glass artists Hokanson-Dix and Jesse Ahrendsen\, fiber artists Kevin Harris and Antrim Street Studio\, and jeweler Wiwat Kamolpornwijit. Washington St. The Chait Galleries Downtown celebrates American Craft Week with new work from artists Craig & Teresa Miller.  The Millers bring a taste of Colorado back to their home state of Iowa with their unique\, one-of-a-kind twist on furniture. The Millers design\, carve\, sand\, and oil branches of the ancient piῆon trees that are indigenous to the southern Colorado area they call home.  The finished furniture pieces lay bare the unique beauty of the craggy trees culminating in functional and innovative art. Chait Galleries is located at 218 E. Washington Street in Iowa City. Modela kicks off American Craft Week with a trunk show and opening reception Saturday\, October 8 from 1-5 pm featuring Iowa City artist\, Jillian Moore (See image shown). Moore was featured in the April/May 2011 issue of the national magazine American Craft—a sponsor of American Craft Week. She creates colorful\, scientific sculptures and jewelry using composite resin and spray foam insulation. Moore was named a Society for Contemporary Craft LEAP Award finalist for 2011. Their exhibit\, Embroidered Pet Portraits\, runs through October 31. Home Ec Workshop is located at 207 N. Linn St. The Iowa City Johnson County Senior Center\, 28 S. Linn St\, invites the public of all ages to learn to quilt during America Craft week 2011. The quilters meet in room 211 Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8 AM - Noon.  Also featured is the exhibition\, Regeneration: From Canvas To Cloth\, One Generation to the Next\, with Dianne Day’s mixed media interpretation of Walter Skrivseth’s art. A selction of his original paintings will also be on display. Walter Skrivseth was an abstract artist\, who studied in New York City under Hans Hoffman during the height of the abstract expressionist period\, when America was the only place where art was occurring after the devastation of WWII in Europe. It was also when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He lived and painted in Greenwich Village until his wife could no longer care for him. He moved to back to his native Minneapolis to live in a nursing home until he died some 30 years later. Dianne Day\, his niece\, always felt a connection to his paintings\, oils created in New York City\, and acrylics painted every day he lived in that nursing home. After retirement\, Day had time to take a new look at his paintings\, interpreting them through cloth and mixed media. All proceeds from the show will go to the Friends of The Center\, and the Southeast Area Multiple Sclerosis Association\, in memory of her uncle\, Walter Skrivseth. Glassando shows Handpainted Silk Scarfs  by Julia Lohrman Audlehelm. Julia has been accepting commissioned pen & ink art for over 20 years but painting on silk scarfs is a truly new artistic venture for her. Julia explains that her mother always had a passion for creating art. When Julia’s mother passed away\, she left behind a legacy of artistic energies and art supplies. It took Julia years to go though these supplies but when she did\, she found the directions and materials to make hand painted silk scarves. Now with each scarf she creates she feels she honors her mother’s creative energies. The display will run until Oct 31. Glassando is located in Old Capitol Town Center. Admission is free. Flyball is a fast and exciting relay racing team sport for dogs\, dog handlers\, and spectators. A "Flyball Team" consist of four main dogs\, their handlers\, a boxloader person\, and one to two alternate dogs with handlers. The sport is not limited to any one breed of dog\, with both papered pedigrees and mixed breeds\, small and big dogs competing. In competition\, two "Flyball Teams" compete against each other on two lanes. They race down 51 feet and back 51 feet\, 15 feet apart. These lanes contain four jumps set at exact distances apart\, and at the far end is a "Flyball box".  A "Flyball box" is box set up in a way that when a dog steps on it\, a tennis ball is released and sent flying out. To start\, the first "Flyball dog" gets a running start but cannot pass the start/finish line before the green light goes on. The second and remaining "Flyball dogs" on the team get a running pass but\, cannot pass the start/finish line before the preceding dog returning passes the start/finish line. The dogs must complete their runs in order to get a team time. The first team done\, wins the race. Multiple formats make a race. There can be anywhere from 3 to 5 races run during competition. Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center will be highlighting Native American traditions during a cultural celebration that will include the Brown Otter Singers from the Meskwaki Settlementand Native American artists. This event is funded through Humanities Iowa.   Historically\, a few Meskwaki families spent the winter months camped along the Cedar River north of Cedar Rapids in an area that has been called Wickiup Hill for generations. Today\, the Linn County Conservation Department manages this area for recreation and education. Wickiup is the Meskwaki word for the type of house used during the winter camping season.   Activities during the day include dance exhibitions in which the public will be asked to participate.
